Reptiles make surprisingly good pets and
there are many choices when it comes to suitability as pets. Comprising of
turtles, snakes and lizards they are quiet, smaller species being ideal for
small homes and are enthralling to watch. Depending on the type of reptile you
choose as a pet will all depend on the requirements for the home.
Snakes and
lizards are quite happy to make a vivarium their home and this can be furnished
in a variety of ways dependant on the species. Classed as an exotic pet it is
essential to buy a good book on the species you are considering keeping and
there are many to choose from online.
The first requirement is their home and
the vivarium comes in different shapes and sizes dependent on the species, the
majority are a wooden frame with glass viewing doors that slide apart for ease
of access.
These can be tall to allow branched to be included for those reptiles that like to climb or short and long for those ground hugging species that need plenty of room to move about. Other major necessities for the vivarium are the lighting and thermostat. As most reptiles are cold blooded they require a certain temperature and a spotlight is for basking under. The heating system can be complex for the more tropical species or the spotlight is often adequate alone.
